About the Gustav Pope Research Initiative
Discovering talented, lesser-known painters is exciting and just as enjoyable as revisiting the ultra-famous. There is still room for them in new pages, as some chapters in art history remain explained in broad brushstrokes; only a few names have gotten their story told. Today, paintings by Gustav Pope wander about the market without proper cataloging or context and, most regrettably, blind to his contribution to the development of the arts. Fortunately, collectors are regaining a taste for Victorian art, and the public has grown interested. For that reason, it is the right time to create a catalog with a much-deserved and late-served survey of Gustav Pope’s oeuvre. Hopefully, it is a good start for better knowledge and safekeeping of his legacy.
We are currently working in the second stage of the project, which is to collect images and related data of Gustav Pope’s life and works. We need public participation because Gustav Pope’s paintings are kept mainly in private collections. Current or former owners of his pictures could contribute with images and information to enrich our catalog.
